Internship Review
How did you hear about/get it?
At my university, there is a required class for a news-editorial major that is an internship class. I got the internship through my advisor and through the class, however, it is possible to intern there if attending other universities.
Daily tasks
I was an intern reporter for the recreational section of the newspaper, entitled "Get Out." Since the section was small and I was the only intern in it, every single one of my articles was published. Not to mention that I also was asked to write for other desks, such as the business and political ones, as well.
Best part of the job?
There were a few things that were awesome. First, due to my background in the ski industry, I was designated the "ski guy" and was asked to write two large stories on the ski industry. One was featured on the front page of the Sunday edition and the other was the head story of the Business Plus section, which was a weekly insert in the newspaper. Also, I worked the night of the 2008 Presidential election and it was really exciting to be in a newsroom and watch Obama win.
Worst part of the Job?
My editor, although nice, was a little bit condescending. I preferred working with the other editors in the building, but every boss has their little quirks.
Additional Comments/Advice to others
Before the internship, I did not really think that I would like working in a newspaper setting. After it, however, I found that I liked the deadline structure of working and being published. It was a really fun experience.
